Biographical/Historical note
Biographical/Historical note
George E. Hyde (1882-1968) was a well-known author of books on American Indians, earning himself the moniker "dean of American Indian historians." A resident of Omaha, Nebraska, Hyde became fascinated by American Indians after visiting an encampment at the Trans-Mississippi Exposition (1898). Despite having no formal education past the eighth grade, Hyde corresponded with George Bird Grinnell (for whom he was a salaried researcher) and George Bent and published several books, including Red Cloud's Folk (1937), A Sioux Chronicle (1956), and the Life of George Bent (1967).
