A former racecar driver, Edwin F. Coffin was hired by George Gustav Heye around 1922 as the Museum of the American Indian/Heye Foundation's first official photographer. Coffin became a capable archaeological photographer and later carried out archaeological fieldwork in Texas. He served as photographer for the MAI/Heye Foundation until 1932.
