This accession consists of 5 photomicrograph albumen prints by Joseph Janvier Woodward, dated c. 1871. The prints are labelled as follows: "Pleurosigma angulatum," "Sting of Honey Bee," "Surirella Gemma," "Coscinodiscus," "Pleurosigma formosa." For related Woodward correspondence see Record Unit 33.

Historical Note
Janvier Woodward was born in 1833 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1853 and practiced medicine in Philadelphia until 1861. Woodward entered the Union army and was commissioned as a first lieutenant, serving as a regimental surgeon with an artillery unit. In 1862 he was assigned to serve in the surgeon general's office in Washington, D.C. and was eventually assigned to the Army Medical Museum. Woodward became an internationally known authority in the field of photomicrography and was the first military physician to be elected president of the American Medical Association.
