Descriptive Entry

Descriptive Entry
This accession consists of records that document the Natural Resource Conservation and Historic Preservation Project in the Central Region of Ghana, otherwise known as the "Ghana Project," in which the Smithsonian Institution's Office of International Relations and the Midwest Universities Consortium for International Activities (MUCIA) were involved in the establishment of museums in Ghana's historic forts and castles, and the development of exhibitions to be presented in these facilities. The project exhibitions included "Crossroads of People, Crossroads of Trade" and "Elmina Castle across the Centuries," which provided educational programs concerning the gold and silver trade in Ghana during the colonial era. Vera Lawrence Hyatt, Program Director of African and Caribbean Programs in the Office of International Relations, was Director of the "Ghana Project."
The records include exhibition proposals, scripts, catalogs and brochures; project evaluation and feasibility reports; budget information; consultant reports; information on Ghanaians who participated in the project; work plans of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB); project articles; correspondence; exhibition installation photographs; analysis of Smithsonian contribution to the project; and Project Director's quarterly reports.
