Scope and Contents
Board of Director's files, printed material, writings, correspondence, newsletters, photographs and slides, and miscellany regarding the foundation and history of The Alternative Museum in New York. Printed material includes exhibition announcements, press releases, reviews, catalogs, calendars of events, photocopies of exhibition press clippings as well as material regarding music events and an annual music series. Writings include a copy of "American Public Attitudes Toward the Visual Arts," prepared by Marttila and Kiley, Inc., for The Nation Institute and Komar & Melamid, 1994, and an undated essay "A Brief History of the Alternative Museum". Also included are mission statements, by-laws and articles of incorporation. Correspondence to and from Geno Rodriguez, director of The Alternative Museum, with board members, museum supporters, artists and other museum directors. Also included are slides of exhibition installations and leases, floor plans and photographs for spaces occupied by the museum at 594 Broadway, 17 White Street and 28 East 4th Street in New York City.

Art museum and performing arts space; New York, N.Y.; Est. 1975. The Alternative Museum, also known as The Alternative Center For International Arts Inc., was founded as an alternative exhibition space in 1975. In 1976, it launched its World Music Program. In April 2000 The Alternative Museum closed its doors and supported only virtual exhibitions.
