The Amon Carter Museum of Western Art opened to the public in 1961. The Amon G. Carter Foundation, established by newspaper publisher Amon G. Carter, built the structure. Carter, the publisher of the Forth Worth Star-Telegram, acquired many works of art by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell which are now part of the museum's permanent collection. In 2010 the museum changed its name to the Amon Carter Museum of American Art.
