Scope and Contents
The Art-Union of Philadelphia selected records, microfilmed on Reel 3656, contain 11 issues of the Philadelphia Art Union Reporter (1851-1852), the Art-Union's official publication which published the charter, by-laws, lists of officers and exhibitions, sales from the gallery, listings of artists' cards, and other general information relating to the Art-Union; as well as 2 volumes of the "Transactions of the Philadelphia Art Union" (1848-1849), which include proceedings of annual meetings, constitution and by-laws, announcements of meetings, information on awards and prices, and lists of certificate holders. Also included on Reel P90 are annual and biennial reports (1882-1888) from the Board of Managers.

Biographical / Historical
The Art-Union of Philadelphia was founded in 1844 and incorporated in 1847 to encourage appreciation of American artists. It organized free exhibitions which were held at the Union's gallery at 210 Chestnut Street; sold paintings from these exhibitions; and established a membership program that entitled members to the monthly publication, Philadelphia Art Union Reporter, as well as other membership benefits.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Material on reel 3656 lent, 1985, by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, which has more extensive records of Art Union of Philadelphia in its collections. AAA did not microfilm the complete records of the Art-Union. Material on reel P90 lent, 1955, for microfilming by the Free Library of Philadelphia.
