Biographical / Historical
Carl Franz Joseph Barnas (1879-1953) was a painter, etcher, and illustrator. Barnas was born in Germany and spent his student days in art school and travelling in Europe. He immigrated to Ecuador during the rise of Nazi power in the 1930s. He specialized in tropical landscapes and mountain valley scenes. In 1949, Barnas came to the United States, and eventually settled in Houston, Texas. He died in 1953.

Existence and Location of Copies
Portions of the collection are available on 35mm microfilm reel 1779 at the Archives of American Art offices and through interlibrary loan. Researchers should note that the arrangement of material described in the container inventory does not reflect the arrangement of the collection on microfilm.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Donated 1979, 2000 and 2004 by Mrs. B.E. Skipper (also known as Dora L. Skipper), Barnas' daughter. Material microfilmed on Reel 1779 was collected and microfilmed as part of the Archives of American Art's Texas project.
