Biographical / Historical
Heri Bert Bartscht (1919-1996) was a German-born sculptor and educator in Dallas, Texas. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and moved to Dallas in 1953 with his wife, Waltraud. Bartscht founded the Dallas Society for Contemporary Arts and in 1961 established a sculpture program at the University of Dallas, where he taught until 1990. Barscht was a devout Roman Catholic and his sculptures were often influenced by his religious beliefs. He also completed artistic commissions such as baptismal fonts, altar panels, altars, and stations of the cross for churches in the Southwest.
