The papers of painter and instructor Eugene Biel-Bienne and Eugene V. Biel-Bienne estate measure 5.0 linear feet and date from 1929-1974. Included are biographical material; correspondence regarding the French-American Art Institute, letters from artists and photocopies of correspondence with family members; photographs and negatives of Biel-Bienne and his wife, Hertha Maria Biel, and works of art; writings consisting of Biel-Bienne's unpublished memoir, "Close to the Exit," (1967) and drafts of his short stories; and printed material.
Scope and Contents
Papers concerning the administration of the Biel-Bienne estate and the distribution of his works of art consist of correspondence, tax returns and other legal and financial records. Most of the letters are from the executor, Robert A. Baldwin, and Martha Ertl, sister-in-law of Biel-Bienne.

Eugene V. Biel-Bienne (1902-1969) was a painter and instructor who worked in Nashville, Tenn. Biel-Bienne was Director of the French-American Art Institute from 1956 to 1959.

Also found in the Archives are materials lent for microfilming (reel 5042) including a card index of art work, containing approximately 3,075 5x7 cards cataloging works of art by Biel-Bienne in his estate, prepared by his executors in the early 1970s. Each card includes a b&w photograph of the work, title, medium and support, date, exhibition history, and information about the signature, collection, location, and other reproductions.
