Biographical / Historical
Margaret Fitzhugh Browne was a portrait painter active in Boston, Massachusetts.
Browne studied at the Massachusetts Normal Art School, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School, and with Frank Benson and Joseph De Camp. She began her career as a portrait painter in 1910, was the art editor for the Boston Evening Transcript from 1919-1920, and was a member of the Grand Central Galleries, New York.

Existence and Location of Copies
The collection is available on 35mm microfilm reels 2787 and 4306 available at Archives of American Art offices and through interlibrary loan. Researchers should note that the arrangement of the material described in the container inventory does not reflect the arrangement of the collection on microfilm.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The collection was donated in 1975 and 1982 by Emily Wainwright Browne, Margaret Fitzhugh Browne's sister.
Processing Information
The collection received a preliminary level of arrangement after donation and was partially microfilmed on reels 2787 and 4306. The collection was processed, and a finding aid prepared by Jayna Josefson in 2022 with support from the Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative.
