Papers of Boston art dealer of the late 19th and early 20th century, J. Eastman Chase, consisting of letters, and a manuscript fragment and a scrapbook.
Scope and Contents
49 letters, primarily from artists handled by Chase, often dealing with business affairs, but also anectdotal accounts. Included are seven letters from Winslow Homer, 1881-1882 and 1888, four from John La Farge, 1885 and 1888, and eight illustrated letters from painter George H. Clements, 1887. Among the other correspondents are F. D. Millet, Edward Everett Hale, Thomas Wentworth Higginson, Gelett Burgess, William James, John B. Johnston, C. P. Cranch and C. E. Norton. Also 17 pages of a projected autobiography, recounting Chase's Maine boyhood in the 1850's, and a portion of a scrapbook containing newspaper clippings on cultural events in Boston in the 1870's.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Robbins, innkeepers, own the house once occupied by J. Eastman Chase, and found the collection in the attic. The Archives of American Art acquired the collection in June of 1975.
