A letter to Asher B. Durand [frame 479] requesting a canvas; a letter to an unidentified person describing the view of Schroon Lake, which he had painted in 1838; and a letter to George W. Greene, American consul, Rome, in which Cole describes his arrival back in the U.S., his upcoming painting plans, and the American scenery (especially the Catskills); he disparages the public praise of Hiram Powers, reacts to criticism of Albert B. Thorwaldson, discusses Thomas P. Rossiter's troubles in Rome, and other topics.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Letters to Mr. Greene and unidentified donated by E.P. Richardson in memory of Mrs. Walter O. Briggs, Sr., 1955. He purchased them from Goodspeed's Bookshop. The letter to Durand donated by Charles Feinberg, ca. 1956.
