Scope and Contents
The Congressional Medal of Honor was awarded to the Monuments Men on October 22, 2015 for their efforts to locate and return works of art and artifacts seized by the Nazi's during World War II. The gold medal was created by designer by Joel Iskowitz and sculptor and engraver, Phebe Hemphill and struck by the United States Mint in 2014. The obverse side of the medal is inscribed "Monuments Men" and depicts five U.S. soldiers with a portion of the Ghent Altarpiece by Jan van Eyck, Johannes Vermeer's Astronomer, Rembrandt's self-portrait, and a Torah Scroll. The reverse side features additional artwork and is inscribed "It is Our Privilege to Pass on to the Coming Centuries Treasures of the Past Ages" by General Dwight D. Eisenhower and "Act of Congress, 2014". The medal is 3 inches in diameter and weighs 15 troy ounces.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The medal was awared to the Monuments Men by the United States Congress on October 22, 2015. On October 27, 2015, the Archives of American Art became the repository for the medal.
