Cumming, an English immigrant, studied under Robert Swain Gifford (painter, 1840-1905) and taught for several years at the Swain Free School (now known as the Swain School of Design) in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Existence and Location of Copies
35mm microfilm reel 4211 available at Archives of American Art offices and through interlibrary loan.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The sketchbook was purchased by the donor from art dealer Samuel Murray of Wilbraham, Massachusetts.
