Jane Freeman (1871-1963) was a portrait painter and educator in New York City, New York. Born in England, Freeman studied at the Art Students League, the Grand Chaumière, and at the Cooper Union Art School. She was known for her portraits of Dr. Albert Schweitzer and Mother Cabrini. Jane Freeman died in New Jersey in a sanitarium in 1963.

Existence and Location of Copies
The collection is available on 35mm microfilm reel 135 at Archives of American Art offices and through interlibrary loan. Researchers should note that the arrangement of the material described in the container inventory does not reflect the arrangement of the collection on microfilm.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The donor, Mrs. Walter T. Wittman, was Freeman's niece and the executrix of Freeman's estate. She donated Jane Freeman's papers to the Archives of American Art in 1964.
Processing Information
The papers were assembled and annotated by Mrs. Walter Wittman prior to donation and microfilmed upon receipt. The collection was processed, and a finding aid prepared by Jayna Josefson in 2022 with support from the Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative.
