A short biographical sketch, 1949, published in the New Yorker Magazine; a certificate of fellowship for the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (London), 1969; 22 family letters, undated and 1901-1943, and ca. 225 letters and postcards received by Hale, undated and 1948-1978, from friends, publishers, business colleagues, and others; 15 daily appointment books, 1940, 1949, 1953, 1954, 1956, 1958, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1966, 1967, 1972, 1973, 1976, and undated; loose notes and 3 small notebooks, undated and 1966; and lecture notes and scripts, undated and 1940s-1970s, on anatomy, drawing, the history of costume, science and artists, man and culture, and other topics.

Also included are: a transcript of an interview for Radio Free Europe, 1960, on "Man and Culture"; an audio cassette interview of Hale by Karl Fortess, 1975, in which he discusses his theories of art, art history, education, his teaching at the Art Students League, and other topics; ca. 55 pages of sketches and a sketchbook, undated and 1966-1970, mostly of anatomical drawings ( a few envelopes and letters received by Hale also carry anatomical sketches by him; an initialed and dated pencil sketch of Philip Hale by Jo Mielziner, 1920; published articles by and about Hale, 1950s-1970s; and 93 photographs, undated and 1940s-1970s of Hale, his friends, family, home, studio, and art work.

The remainder of the papers consists of 1.4 linear feet (ca. 1,500 pages) of writings and related documents (drafts, final typescripts, publisher contracts, etc.) for books by Robert Hale, including: DRAWING LESSONS FROM THE GREAT MASTERS, 1964; THE ART OF BALCOMB GREENE, 1977 (co-author Terry Coyle); ALBINUS ON ANATOMY, 1979 (co-authored with Terry Coyle); and SNOWLAND, a novel by Hale, which was called in subsequent editions THE WHITE BROWNSTONE.
