Painter, landscape painter; born in Germany, arrived in U.S. in 1869. Studied and exhibited in Germany and Paris, later in Philadelphia and New York areas. Queen Victoria was one of his patrons.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The lender, Don Lewis, Jr., gathered these materials for his master's thesis at the University of Virginia, and in preparation for a Herzog exhibition organized by Chapellier Galleries and Auslew Gallery, where Lewis was assistant director.
