Material relating to George Horatio Derby and Stephen Massett. Included are: two letters, with typescripts, undated and 1851, to Hitchcock from Derby and a typescript of a letter, 1855 to his wife, Martha Taliaferro Hunter Hitchcock from Derby, an obituary clipping on Derby, and a scrapbook containing a manuscript fragment and clippings of Derby's writings under the pen name "John Phoenix"; and a letter, 1871, from Massett (aka Jeems Pipes of Pipesville) to the Hitchcocks enclosing sketches and a manuscript "All About Pipesville," a clipping on Massett, a sketch, and two of his calling cards.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
Hitchcock-Coit papers were donated to Mills College Library by Mrs. Paul Scott Foster of San Anselmo, a cousin of Floride Green, biographer and companion of the Hitchcock's daughter Lillie Hitchcock Coit. The Archives of American Art microfilmed only 12 of the 2037 items in the papers.
