Painter and sculptor Dorothy Hood (1919-2000) was active in Houston, Texas. Her mentor was José Clemente Orozco. She is known for combining the styles of Mexican surrealism and American Color Field School.

Existence and Location of Copies
Portions of the collection are available on 35mm microfilm reel 3440 at Archives of American Art offices and through interlibrary loan. Researchers should note that the arrangement of the material described in the container inventory does not reflect the arrangement of the collection on microfilm.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Dorothy Hood donated her papers to the Archives of American Art in 1984.
Separated Materials
Material including eight scrapbooks, 1888-1981, containing clippings, exhibition catalogs and announcements, photographs, scattered letters and printed material were returned to the donor after microfilming onto reels 2153-2154, 2245, and part of 3440, for the Archives of American Art's Texas project, and are not described in the collection container inventory.
Processing Information
The Dorothy Hood papers were loaned for microfilming and returned to the donor. Portions of the collection microfilmed on reel 3440 were subsequently donated to the Archives of American Art in 1984 and were arranged upon receipt. The collection was processed, and a finding aid prepared by Jayna Josefson in 2022 with support from the Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative.
