David Stewart Hull's research files pertaining to the 1986 New York Historical Society's (NYHS) exhibition on artist James Henry Cafferty and research files for an unrealized exhibition on William Winner.
Scope and Contents
The bulk of the collection pertains to Cafferty and includes photographs of his works of art, correspondence with Cafferty's collectors and galleries, exhibition research files (mainly photocopies of rare documents), a research summary file, exhibition publicity, and expense files. Of particular note is a correspondence file with Cafferty's great-granddaughter, the Reverence Helen L. Chapman. Files on William Winner include exhibition research files, research correspondence, and photographs of Winner's works of art.

David Stewart Hull (1938-1998) was a literary agent and curator in New York, New York. Hull was an authority on James Henry Cafferty's career and curated the 1986 NYHS exhibition on Cafferty and authored the accompanying catalog. In 1986, Hull undertook a new research project for an exhibition on Winner that was never realized.

Donated 2016 by the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College via John Stomberg, Director, who, in 2016 by bequest of Frank Stetz, the life partner of David Stewart Hull, acquired the material.
