This microfilm collection consists of two of African American abstract painter Ronald Joseph's sketchbooks. One sketchbook is dated 1951-1952. The other contains a dated collage from 1972, but the bulk of the work probably dates from the 1950s.

Biographical / Historical
Ronald Joseph (1910-1922) is an St. Kitts-born African American abstract painter. He moved to New York City around 1920-1921 and participated in the Works Progress Administration mural project and the Harlem Artists Guild. He received a Rosenwald Fellowship and studied art in Peru for two years, then studied in Paris under the G.I. Bill. Joseph moved to Brussels, Belgium in 1956, where he continued his artistic career.
