An interview with Margueritte Kimball conducted 1993 Mar. 10-Apr. 13, by Robert Brown, for the Archives of American Art, regarding her years at the Cranbrook Academy of Art.
Scope and Contents
Kimball discusses her childhood in Clinton, Mass. and Nashua, N.H. in the family of a railroad employee; death of her father and move, in 1926, to Cambridge, Mass. where her mother worked as a milliner and opened a dressmaking business; training in bookkeeping; classes at Copley Society, Boston; enrollment at Cranbrook Academy of Art, 1942, and working as financial secretary there until 1968; and her friendship with Carl and Olga Milles. She recalls Eliel and Loja Saarinen, Harry Bertoia, Zoltan Sepeshy, and many other teachers and students, and comments on students who attended via the G.I. Bill and on teacher-student relationship and administration of the Academy.
