Immediate Source of Acquisition
Albert Hise of the Massillon Museum came across the letters at a sale of the household effects of a family that came to Canton, Oh. from Lancaster, Penn. about 1900. In correspondence of the Archives of American Art, Hise writes "I am sorry I didn't buy the portrait of his [Lightner] grandmother as it sold for only 40.00 dollars and was a creditable piece of work--I hadn't read the letter or perhaps I would have." Only the typescripts have been microfilmed.
