The John Loughery letters measure 0.2 linear feet and date from 1985-1990. Letters relate to John Loughery's writings about artists and art critics.
Approximately one half of the collection consists of letters from Elsie Driggs to John Loughery from 1985 through 1990. Letters relate to Driggs' works of art, her husband, Lee Gatch, her relationships with other artists, her works of art, Loughery's writings about Driggs, and their friendship, in general.
Additional letters concern various research and writing by Loughery. Included is a letter from Emily Farnham, Charles Demuth's biographer, and a letter from Julie Mellby, Associate Librarian at the Whitney Museum of American Art, regarding Loughery's interest in Charles Daniel. Included with Farnham's letter is a 1956 transcript interview excerpt with Daniel; letters from artist Sean Scully, Helen Farr Sloan, Ira Glackens and a letter and exhibition catalog from Sonia Gechtoff regarding an article Loughery wrote about her. There is an additional letter to Loughery from Lincoln Kirstein, President of The School of American Ballet, in which he writes about his disgust for Modern art.

John Loughery is an art critic and historian in Bronx, New York. Loughery wrote many articles and essays on artists and art critics including the biography John Sloan: Painter and Rebel, 1995. Loughery bought one of Elsie Driggs' paintings and also wrote an article about Driggs' life and career for Woman's Art Journal in 1986 and an article about Lee Gatch, for Arts Magazine in 1988.
