An annotated exhibition checklist, undated; a handwritten inventory of oil paintings with 2290 entries dating 1852 to ca. 1907; and a handwritten inventory of 254 watercolors, ca. 1889-1902. The inventories include titles and descriptions of each work, dates the works were painted, dimensions, prices, sales, ownership, and notations of subsequent changes made by Machen.

Painter; Northwestern Ohio. Painted landscapes, portraits and nature; Dutch-American descent; taught at Detroit College and Sacred Heart Convent (1881). Contributed to Detroit Institute of Art and Detroit Museum of Art. Painted for President Grover Cleveland (1894). Painted species of bass and perch for U.S. Fish Commission, Department of Interior.
