Scope and Contents
The papers of sculptor and art instructor, Hermon Atkins MacNeil, measure 3.3 linear feet and date from 1885-1947. Included are biographical material, correspondence, photographs, works of art, writings, and printed material.
Biographical material includes a resume and art school report cards. Correspondence consists of several postcards and greeting cards. Photographs are of MacNeil, his family, friends, models, studio and sculpture, and of other sculptor's work including his wife, Carol Brooks MacNeil. Artwork includes sketchbooks with notes and sketches includinga a sketch by James Coughlin. Writings include a handwritten book regarding Henri Michel Chapu annotated by MacNeil. Printed material conists of clippings and exhibition catalogs.

Herman Atkins MacNeil (1866-1947) was a sculptor and art instructor in Queens, N.Y. Born in Everett, Mass., MacNeil taught at Cornell University, Art Institute of Chicago, Pratt Institute and American Academy of Rome. MacNeil established the American Indian as a legitimate artistic theme. He was the husband of sculptor Carol Brooks MacNeil.

35mm microfilm reels 2726 and 2727 available at Archives of American Art offices and through interlibrary loan.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Donated in 1982 by Robert A. Sanborn, who received them from Donald Weeks, an English professor at Mills College, who, in turn, received them from James Coughlin, MacNeil's colleague. Additional material donated by Eliza Wingate in 2022 who received the material from her father, James, who was friends with MacNeil.
