The Maxwell Galleries records measure 0.6 linear feet and date from 1943 to 1970. The collection contains exhibition announcements, catalogs, a membership card, and newspaper clippings, most of which are advertisements for exhibitions at Maxwell Galleries. The collection includes two scrapbooks, one is comprised of clippings and the other contains photographs from exhibitions, invitations, catalogs, and newspaper clippings. Also found here is one copy of Jackson Pollock: Psychoanalytic Drawings, by C. L. Wysuph. Wysuph dedicated the book to Fred Maxwell.

Maxwell Galleries, Ltd. was started in San Francisco, California in 1940 by Fred Maxwell. The gallery specialized in 19th and 20th century American and European paintings as well as early California art. In 1973, Maxwell's nephew, Mark Hoffman, and his wife, Colleen, inherited Maxwell Galleries.

Existence and Location of Copies
Portions of the collection are available on 35mm microfilm reel 3893 at the Archives of American Art offices and through interlibrary loan. Researchers should note that the arrangement of material described in the container inventory does not reflect the arrangement of the collection on microfilm.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The collection was donated in 1981 by Marcus Hoffman, proprietor of the Gallery.
