Biographical / Historical

Biographical / Historical
Harrison McIntosh (1914-2016) was a ceramicist in Claremont, California, known for the simple elegant forms and the sgraffito and spotting patterns of his work. McIntosh was a member of the first generation of California studio potters.
McIntosh was born in Vallejo, California. He studied with Glen Lukensat the University of Southern California, Richard Petterson at Claremont Graduate School, and Marguerite Wildenhain at Pond Farm in Guerneville, California. McIntosh worked primarily as a studio potter, focusing on refined functional forms and exacting surface decoration. He also designed dinnerware, serving as a consultant to corporations such as Mikasa. In the mid-seventies, he applied his theme-and-variation methods to more sculptural work, setting ceramic domes and eggs on highly polished, reflective pieces of chrome.
McIntosh's work can be found in over 40 museum collections around the world. He died in 2016 at the age of 101.
