Biographical / Historical
Evelyn Metzger (1911-2007) was a painter and sculptor in New York City, New York, who worked in various styles including cubism, fauvism, impressionism and realism. She was also known for pioneering the use of spray paint in fine art. Metzger was born to wealthy parents who were avid art collectors. She studied under C.K. Chatterton, George Bridgman, Rafael Soyer, George Grosz, and Sally Farnham in the United States, and under Guzman de Rojas and Demetrio Urruchua in South America.

The collection is available on 35mm microfilm reel 2 at Archives of American Art offices and through interlibrary loan. Researchers should note that the arrangement of the material described in the container inventory does not reflect the arrangement of the collection on microfilm.

The papers were donated by Evelyn Metzger.
Processing Information
The papers were microfilmed after receipt on reel 2. The collection was processed and a finding aid prepared by Jayna Josefson in 2022 with support from the Smithsonian American Women's History Initiative.
