Papers compiled and annotated by Smith's younger sister, Josephine Nelson, as part of her research for her memoir, "My Sister Gladys," in GLADYS NELSON SMITH (Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., 1984).

Included are correspondence between Gladys Nelson Smith and her sisters Josephine and Lorraine Nelson; letters from her dealers, Marie Witwer in Kansas, 1921-1937, the Turner Art Galleries in Denver, 1929-1952, and the Thurber Galleries in Chicago, 1924-1927; a letter from the Art League of Washington with a membership card attached; exhibition catalogs; clippings; a notebook on watercolor painting and frames, with pencil sketches of frames; photographs of braided rugs and wood burning art by Smith; notes about her paintings, The Tippler and Time Out; sales receipts; a diary of a trip to Europe, 1930-1931;

photographs of Smith, her family, friends and homes; poems and short stories by Smith, some based on her experiences as a painter; three books with sketches on the end pages by Smith; and miscellany. Also included are Josephine Nelson's writings about Smith and the Nelson Nelson family genealogy and an unbound autobiography of Smith's father, Joseph Kibler Nelson, Recollections of My Early Life.
