Scope and Contents
Scope and Contents
Purported by its title as "Remarks prepared by Mr. Saul Steinberg for a luncheon given in his honor at the Smithsonian Institution on February 27, 1967," the document is, on close inspection, a stream of nonsense in the form of a grand proclamation, handwritten in a fanciful, antiquated script on Smithsonian letterhead.

Administration
Immediate Source of Acquisition
Charles Blitzer, then Assistant Secretary for Art and History, hosted the luncheon for Steinberg that the artist's "remarks" were given. Blitzer framed the document and it hung in his office in the Smithsonian Castle for many years. It was transferred 2002 by the Architectural History and Historic Preservation, Smithsonian Institution Castle Collection via Richard Stamm, Keeper of the Castle Collection.
