A video taped interview of artist Hassel Smith, conducted by Paul Karlstrom, Archives of Art, West Coast Regional Center, and produced in collaboration by Karlstrom and the Office of Educational Television and Radio, University of California at studios of ETVR as program #43 of their "Open Window" series.
Scope and Contents
Smith dicusses his emmigration to England and his continued close ties to the San Francisco Bay Area art community; his experiences as a teacher of art in the British educational system compared to those in the U.S.; how teaching has affected his art; the development of his art as a so-called Abstract Expressionist to his current "color-shape" paintings; the terms "geometric" and "abstract" and their application to his own work; and the significance of gameboard and gamecourt, and the grid in his most recent work. Examples of Smith's paintings are shown throughout the interview.
