Descriptive Entry
Descriptive Entry
This accession consists of records that document the storage of U.S. Capitol sculptures at the Smithsonian. The statues were removed from the east front of the Capitol in 1958 and stored at the Capitol Power Plant until 1974, when the Smithsonian provided temporary storage for the deteriorating works. Statues included "Discovery of America," depicting Christopher Columbus by Luigi Persico; "Rescue," by Horatio Greenough; "Genius of America," by Persico; "Peace," by Persico; "War," by Persico; and "Justice and History," by Thomas Crawford.
These materials include correspondence, memoranda, clippings, and photographs. The primary correspondent is Paul N. Perrot, Assistant Secretary for Museum Programs, with one memorandum dating after Perrot's tenure, to Tom L. Freudenheim, Assistant Secretary for Museums.
