The Rinzler Archives Reference Collection (RARC) was established by Rinzler Archives staff in 2012 in order to accommodate the vast archival resources accumulated by archives staff since 1987, when the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage acquired the Moses and Frances Asch Collection (including Folkways Records and Service Corps.). The overall collection consists of books and other printed matter, cassette tapes, LPs, 78s, 45s, and ephemera, most of which are related to a wide range of record labels, including those now owned by the non-profit record label Smithsonian Folkways.

Arrangement
Arrangement
The Rinzler Archives Reference Collection is arranged in both the Archives reading room and repository (vault) based on format. Nearly all books and LPs are located in the reading room, while all of the other formats (e.g., cassettes, 78s, and ephemera) are housed in the repository.

Biographical / Historical
Biographical / Historical
The contents of the Rinzler Archives Reference Collection are most closely associated with materials that Moses Asch had in his personal library. Once the Moses and Frances Asch Collection came to the Smithsonian in 1988 (after the 1987 acquisition), Center Archivist Jeff Place began organizing and expanding the audio holdings.
