Anthropologist David Wason Ames (1922- ) created the collection to document his work among the Wolof people of the Gambia. Ames, who received a Ph.D. in anthropology from Northwestern University in 1953, taught at California State University at San Francisco, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and the University of Wisconsin. His research interests include acculturation in West Africa, economic anthropology, ethnography of the Hausa and Wolof peoples, and ethnomusicology. Ames co-wrote the following book with Anthony V. King: Glossary of Hausa Music and Its Social Contexts, Evanston, Illinois: Northwestern University Press, 1971.
