Philip L. Ravenhill, 1945-1997, anthropologist, chief curator of the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution, 1987-1997. Received a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Nyack College in Nyack, N.Y., in 1968, and a master's degree in 1970 and a doctorate in 1976 in anthropology from the New School for Social Research in Manhattan, New York. Prior to joining the Smithsonian, Dr. Ravenhill was a senior research fellow at the International African Institute (IAI) in London and project director of the West African Museums Project (WAMP) in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire.
