This collection includes 329 black and white photographic prints, measuring 8 x 10 inches or smaller, that depict African art objects and were published in Warren M. Robbins' book, African Art in American Collections (New York, Washington, London: Praeger, 1966). Dogon, Kurumba, Bobo, Mossi, Lobi, Bijogo, Baga, Kissi, Mende, Sherbro, Yoruba, and Bambara peoples, as well as others, created the objects throughout Africa. Photographers represented include Eliot Elisofon, Edgar Dorsey Taylor, Joya Hairs, Elisabeth Little, Arnold Newman and Charles Uht. Institutions represented include the American Museum of Natural History (New York), the Brooklyn Museum, the Peabody Museum (Harvard), University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University Art Gallery, among others.

Warren M. Robbins (1923-2008) was an American art collector and the founder of the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution. He published several books on African Art, including African Art in American Collections, A Man for All Reasons, and African Sculpture.
