The photographs document Gulla Kell Pfeffer's trip, ca. 1927, from Victoria (Cameroon) to Kano (Nigeria). She had spent time with the Zumperi, continued on through Takum and Wukari following the old trade road connecting the Grassfields with this region. From there she traveled to Pankshin, Jos, Zaria, before reaching Kano. The pictures have been captioned by Kell Pfeffer.

Gulla Kell Pfeffer, b.1887, Germany; anthropologist. She received a Doctorate in Philosophy at Berlin in 1936; traveled, in 1928, on an expedition to the Cameroons and Nigeria to study the Fulbe people, with particular emphasis on their language and literature. She became proficient in the Ful language and collected the tales told by the traditional storyteller Malum Amadu, which were later published as Amadu's Bundle. Married, in her second marriage, Alexander Kell in London, 1939. Made the documentary film, "Menschen im Busch," (camerawork done by Dr. Friederich Dalsheim); published Die weisse Mah, 1929, and, in 1936, published "Ful'be Prose and Poetry."
