Graduated with a B.A. in history in 1970 from Goshen College, Indiana; received a Ph.D. in African History in 1986 at Indiana University. A Fulbright-Hayes doctoral award funded the research for his dissertation entitled,
Mboma and the Lower Zaire: A Socioeconomic Study of a Kongo trading Community, c. 1785-1885.
Following his death, an abstract of his dissertation entitled,
Changing Perceptions of Wealth Among the Bamaboma (Lower Zaire),
edited by Phyllis Martin, was published by the African Studies Program at Indiana University (Indiana University, 1990).
