Biographical/Historical note
Michael Kennéy, M.D., 1904-1982, born Mizrah Konn in Rowno, Russia. Attended University of Warsaw, 1923-1925; attended the University of Geneva, 1925-1930 and, from the University of Geneva, earned a Bachelor of Medical Science, 1929 and a M.D., 1930; subsequently studied bacteriology and immunology for an academic year at the University of Warsaw Graduate College and, during a three month course, tropical medicine at the University of Brussels, School of Tropical Medicine, where he was taught by the eminent parasitologist, J. Rodhain; and received a Colonial Physician degree (D.T.M.) in June of 1931. Served as Resident Physician in the Belgian Congo Medical Service, 1933-1935, at the Busu Melo District along a stretch of the lower Congo River; as Chief Medical Officer of the Jadotville (Likasi) District of Katanga in southeastern Congo, 1935-1939; emigrated from Brussels to the United States, 1940; served at Chief of Medical and Laboratory Services at Kwakwani the Berbice District of British Guiana, 1943-1948; returned to the United States in 1948; became a naturalized United States citizen in 1949 and pursued a career in pathology becoming a leading expert in pathoparasitology. Prints and negatives were willed to Dr. Pascal James Imperato by Mrs. Lona B. Kennéy and donated by Dr. Imperato to the National Museum of African Art in 1997.
