Biographical/Historical note
Herbert M. Cole, art historian, received a B.A. from Williams College, 1957 and, from Columbia University, a M.A. in 1964 and a Ph.D. in 1968. In 1973, Dr. Cole conducted five months of field research in Kenya on jewelry and personal decoration. Several of Dr. Cole's published articles draw upon his observations and experiences during this time. These include in African Arts, "Vital Arts in Northern Kenya," (VII, 2, winter 1974, pages. 12-23, 82); "Photography in Africa," (XVIII, 4, August 1985, pages 28-29); and "The Art and Technology of Field Photograph," (XVIII, 4, August 1985, pages. 46-55, 98-99).
