Founded in 1969 by painters Robin Anderson and Yony Waite and graphic designer David Hart, Gallery Watatu was one of Nairobi's longest-established galleries. Located in the Central Business District (CBD), the Gallery was the first in the area to to feature both international and local artists. Sold in 1985 to Californian gallery owner Ruth Schaffner and her husband, artifacts dealer Adama Diawara, the new owners focused on cultivating contemporary Kenyan art. The Gallery closed in 2011.
