Afterimage: The Journal of Media Arts and Cultural Criticism is a bimonthly journal published between 1972 and the present. Between 1972 and 2018, it was published by the Visual Studies Workshop--a non-profit organization in Rochester, New York dedicated to art education. In 2018, it transferred publishing to the University of California Press.
The original journal was founded by photographer Nathan Lyons. It printed bimonthly and cover themes of art, culture, and politics through features, essays, local and international news, and exhibition and book reviews. The focus of the journal was to create a social dialogue aronud politically engaged artistic practices and the artist as cultural critic and curator.
