John Claude White (1853-1918) was an amateur British photographer who spent his entire professional life working for the British Raj. From 1883 to 1908, White was stationed in Kathmandu and Sikkim, and his famous images of the Himalayas were taken during this period. He accompanied Francis Younghusband on the British expedition to Tibet in 1903-1904 and made a number of landscape photographs during the campaign, including the image in this collection.
