Papers, 1951; 1961-1977, and undated, in Chinese, Some recorded in brush calligraphy, including: biographical data; membership cards; over 30 honorary awards and appointments; a hospital diary recorded by Xie's nurses to document his last 100 day; nearly 50 letters (received 1981-1997) from colleagues and friends; a few personal journals; writings by Xie or copied by him (some in bound volumes), mostly related to his research on artists and his publications, including chronologies of artists, notes on the authentication and identification of Chinese painting and calligraphy in various collections, a speech draft, and manuscripts of Wang Xian, Guo Xi heji and others; Lao Jixiong's 1986 manuscript of Dunhuang shiku; poems copied and written by Xie, or created for him by firends; invitations and two exhibition guest books; printed material; seal impressions; 27 photo album containing over 1800 photographs that show Xie, his wife Chen Peiqiu and their family, fellow artists, colleagues and friends, exhibition receptions and installations, works by other artists and historical manuscripts from various collections, and nearly 500 still photographs, and over 300 glass, cut film, and roll film negatives, mostly illustrating his paintings, cave sites, works by other artists, and historical manuscripts.

Xie Zhiliu (1910-1997) was a Shanghai painter, art historian, art theorist, and connoisseur of Chinese art and in particular traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy. His wife Chen Peiqiu (1923-) is also a painter.

謝稚柳(1910-1997),原名稚,字稚柳,後以字行,晚号壮暮翁。斋名:鱼饮溪堂、杜斋、煙江楼、苦篁斋等。江蘇常州人。擅长古書畫鑑定。初与张珩(张葱玉)齐名,世有"北张南謝"之說。 歷任上海市文物保管委员会编纂、副主任、上海市博物館顧問、中國美術家協會理事、上海分會副主席、中國書法家協會理事、上海分會副主席、國家文物局全國古代書畫鑑定小组组长、國家文物鑑定委员会委员等。著有《敦煌石室記》、《敦煌藝術叙錄》、《水墨畫》、《鑒餘雜稿》等,编有《宋徽宗趙佶全集》、《唐五代宋元名迹》、《郭熙、王诜合集》等。
