Scope and Contents
This collection contains the records of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists and documents the activities of that organization and its officers. The materials comprises correspondence, calendars, programs, handbooks, financial papers, bank statements, ledgers, minutes, constitutions and by-laws, programs, requests for funding, calls for papers, manuscripts and memorandums.
Please note that the contents of the collection and the language and terminology used reflect the context and culture of the time of its creation. As an historical document, its contents may be at odds with contemporary views and terminology and considered offensive today. The information within this collection does not reflect the views of the Smithsonian Institution or National Anthropological Archives, but is available in its original form to facilitate research.

The American Association of Physical Anthropologists is the world's leading professional organization for physical anthropologists. Established in 1930, the AAPA now has an international membership of over 1,700.
Administration
Immediate Source of Acquisition
The AAPA records were received in six accessions. One was found among the papers of T. Dale Stewart, which were donated to the archives in 1995, and consists of records accumulated by the secretary-treasurers J. Lawrence Angel, 1952-1956; James N. Spuhler, 1956-1958; Edward E. Hunt, 1958-1960; and Steward, 1960-1964. The second and third accessions were donated in 1984 and 1985, respectively, by Frank Spencer. The second consists of records accumulated by Eugene Giles while he was president from 1981-1983 and the second contains the correspondence of James Gavan, who was president from 1977-1979. A fourth accession was donated by Michael Little, who was vice president, program chair, and president during 1988-1994. The fifth accession was donated by William S. Pollitzer in 1998 and a sixth accession was donated by Mark Weiss in 2006.
The National Anthropological Archives continues to receive accruals from the American Association of Physical Anthropologists. Please consult with the reference archivist for more updated information regarding this collection.
