This collection contains Lucie Wood Saunders' files from her field work in Egypt during the 1960s and 1970s; grant proposals; drafts and reprints of her articles; her dissertation; papers presented at conferences; reading notes; university files; and photographs.

Biographical Note
Lucie Wood Saunders (1928-2008) was a cultural anthropologist who conducted research in the rural village Tafahna al Ashraf (Tafehnet al Ashraf) in Daqahliya province in the Egyptian delta. She was educated at Columbia University, where she earned her M.A. in English (1950) and Ph.D. in Anthropology (1959). She first carried out fieldwork in Tafahna al Ashraf in 1961-1962, focusing on family life and gender relations. She returned in 1978-1979 to study the long-term consequences of national economic and social policies on the village. Saunders was also a professor at Lehmen College (1965-1996), serving as chair of the Department of Anthropology for most of her tenure.
