Lt. Frederick Schwatka (1849-1892) attended Willamette University and West Point Military Academy. He served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Calvary in the Dakota Territory, while studying medicine and law, receiving a medical degree in 1875. From 1878-1880 he led an expedition sponsored by the American Geographical Society to search for remains of the lost Sir John Franklin's expedition in arctic Canada. Schwatka made three more arctic trips, and another later in Mexico, before his death in 1892.
