Scope and Contents
Copy in hand of George Gibbs, marked, "Simpson No. 4." Gives one native term only for each English word, with the apparent implication that the two dialects are the same. Harrington's listing of this manuscript in 39th Annual Report, Bureau of American Ethnology, 1916, page 587, as "Old Pecos, from Jemez and Old Pecos," would not seem to be in strict accord with the title given on the manuscript. The whereabouts of the original Simpson Manuscript, from which this copy was made, are unknown. (The only word in this vocabulary that also appears in the Old Pecos vocabulary of Stevenson, Bureau of American Ethnology Number 1017, is the word for fire, and the Stevenson Manuscript states that (according to Loew) the word for fire is the same in both dialects.)--M.C.B.
